As you explore the bio-cultural heritage of the Eastern Himalayas at the British Heritage Bungalows of Wild Mahseer, drive with us to the Garo Hills to meet the residents of the Garo Village, who are among the few remaining matrilineal societies in the world.

The Garos

Garos are the second largest tribe of Meghalaya state of India. They were brought to Assam by the British rulers. They are settled mostly in the foothills of Arunachal Pradesh. The Garos are one of the few remaining matrilineal societies in the world. The individuals take their clan titles from their mothers.

The Garo Village

Visit the Garo Village, in Sonitpur District, which is only a 25 minutes-drive from the Eastern Himalayan Botanic Ark, and meet the members of the Garo community and explore the uncommon element at Garo village with their rich culture and traditions.

Ali-Aye-Ligang

Come be a part of the most colourful spring festival of the Mishing community, “Ali-Aye-Ligang”, on the first Wednesday of the month February-March. The stepping, flinging, flapping of hands and swaying of hips reflects your youthful passion.
