Honoring the Real Heroes

(Honoring the Rea(Heroes of our Community at the Eastern Himalayan Botanic Ark April 08, 2017)

“It is our collective and individual responsibility to preserve and tend to the environment in which we all live.”- His Holiness Dalai Lama

The Eastern Himalayan landscape with its fold of terrains, stretches across Nepal, Bhutan, northeast India and northern Myanmar. Communities living in these regions not only share the landscape but also history, culture, religion, the rich biodiversity of flora and fauna and a deeper emotion – quest to preserve and tend to our natural and cultural heritage.

On April 02, 2017, during His Holiness Dalai Lama’s stopover at Guwahati en route to Arunachal Pradesh, the Nation shared an emotional moment through the reunion of His Holiness with Retired Havildar Shri Naren Chandra Das, the lone survivor of the Assam Rifles Group, who escorted His Holiness Dalai Lama to Tawang, 58 years ago. While the two did not exchange words during their first meeting, the reunion brought back memories and unspoken feelings of a shared journey and an era gone by.

His Holiness Dalai Lama and his teachings on preserving our environment, nurturing interdependence between nature and man and restoring our natural wealth for future generations guides the principle around which the Eastern Himalayan Botanic Ark has been built. Iconic contributions by community members who carry forward our natural and cultural legacy merit recognition. They are the real role models, who inspire us to strive harder to protect our environment. Our journey at the Ark is incomplete without the real heroes of our Community, who guide us with their wealth of knowledge and invaluable accomplishments. Who teach us the values of perseverance, humility, respecting and preserving our roots.

Taking a walk down memory lane and capturing timelessness, expressing our gratitude to the legends who continue to make a difference and tend to our natural surroundings, we had the honour to host Shri Naren Chandra Das, who hails from Balipara, along with our great Botanists Shri Kamison Mili from Mishing Community, Shri Rajen Kurmi and Shri Bhadra Nahak at the Eastern Himalayan Botanic Ark on April 08, 2017. Shri Ranjit Barthakur and Smt Radhika Barthakur, Founder Trustees of Balipara Foundation presented the publication “Tawang – Land of the dawn-lit mountains” by Pomi Baruah to Shri Naren Chandra Das and Shri Naren Chandra Das honored our Botanists by making them wear the traditional Mishing muffler.
